Online News BD: Floods Leave 1.5 Million Stranded in Bangladesh

The flood situation in Feni, Cumilla, and Noakhali has taken a dire turn as relentless rainfall and rising river levels have left more than 1.5 million people stranded. This devastating event has captured the attention of all Bangladeshi Bangla newspapers and online news BD platforms, with conditions worsening across multiple districts.

Feni District: Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya Severely Affected

In Feni, the upazilas of Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya are experiencing the worst of the flooding. Chhagalnaiya upazila was heavily impacted last night, with floodwaters submerging most areas, including rural roads, agricultural fields, and fish ponds. This has cut off essential access and severely impacted livelihoods. The situation in Parshuram is equally alarming, with one person reported missing, and the Feni-Parshuram regional road now impassable. Power outages have also affected many areas since last night.

Fulgazi Upazila Executive Officer Tania Bhuiyan reported that thousands of people across six unions are stranded, with the Feni-Bilonia regional highway submerged, cutting off road communication with the district headquarters. “The Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers have risen far above the danger level,” she noted, marking the third flood in the region since early July.

Cumilla District: Gumti River Breaches Danger Mark

In Cumilla, the water levels of the Gumti and Muhuri rivers have risen significantly due to continuous heavy rainfall and the opening of the sluice gate at Dumber Lake in Tripura, India. Over the past four days, 320 millimeters of rainfall were recorded, with 52 millimeters falling in the last 24 hours alone, according to the Cumilla weather office.

“The rainfall is due to a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, and continuous rain is expected for the next 72 hours,” stated Weather Officer Arifur Rahman. The Gumti river is now flowing 10 to 15 centimeters above the danger level, submerging low-lying areas in Cumilla and inundating crops in the char areas. This has raised concerns about a potential food grain crisis in the coming months.

Flooding has also affected Adarsha Sadar, Burichang, Brahmanpara, Debidwar, and Muradnagar upazilas, with residents in Cumilla city and surrounding areas on high alert as the Gumti dam faces the risk of breaching or overflowing.

Noakhali District: Over a Million People Stranded

The situation in Noakhali remains critical as floodwaters continue to rise due to heavy rainfall and tidal surges. Over a million people are stranded, with the worst-affected areas including Kabirhat and Senbagh upazilas. Schools have been converted into shelters, and relief efforts are underway with the distribution of dry food and rice.

Munshi Amir Faisal, the WDB executive engineer in Noakhali, reported that the district experienced 1,020 millimeters of rainfall in the past month, the highest in 20 years. This unprecedented rainfall has left many areas submerged, and the district administration is working to provide relief to those affected.
